How many solar systems were installed by companies that are no longer operating?

Several major residential solar companies have failed, merged, or ceased operations in recent years, including companies such as:

  • Titan Solar Power
  • ADT Solar
  • Lumio
  • SunPower
  • Sunnova
  • Freedom Forever

Industry reports indicate that the residential solar market experienced a significant wave of installer failures between 2022 and 2026, affecting hundreds of installers and well over a million customer accounts.

The most recent figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, cited by industry researchers, show approximately 4.72 million homes with solar as of late 2024. The Solar Energy Industries Association claims that there are over 5 million solar installations in the United States.

Using:

  • ~4.7 million installed residential systems
  • Industry consolidation and failures over the last decade
  • The fact that many installations were done by small regional contractors that have since disappeared

A reasonable estimate is:

My best estimate would be about 1.2 to 1.5 million U.S. homeowners, or roughly 25% to 30% of all residential solar owners, now have systems originally installed by a company that has gone out of business, been acquired, or otherwise stopped servicing customers.

That's over 1 million opportunities to help homeowners with no solar system support. Some of which have systems that are not operating right now.

The Impact on Homeowners with No Solar System Support

For a homeowner whose installer disappears:

  • Equipment warranties from manufacturers often remain valid.
  • Workmanship warranties from the installer are frequently lost.
  • Service, monitoring, troubleshooting, and roof-leak support can become difficult.
  • Systems may not be working at all.
  • Homeowners often need to hire an independent solar service company and pay out of their pocket for repairs.

For someone in the solar industry, the "orphaned solar customer" market has become a significant opportunity. If 1.2–1.5 million systems are effectively orphaned, that's a very large installed base needing maintenance, monitoring, repairs, battery retrofits, and system upgrades.

What Is Required, What is Provided

  • You would be required to do in-home presentations. Why? because these homeowners need to see a confident, knowledgeable professional that is there to help.
  • There is a 1-day training program offered in various cities. Travel and lodging are paid for. You would be required to attend this training to learn the terms of the service contract and how to position the service contract/battery solution.
  • Appointments are scheduled for you. Your only obligation prior to the meeting is to confirm the appointment the night before.
  • If overnight travel is required you will be reimbursed for expenses.

What is the Compensation for Helping These Homeowners?

This is a 1099 position. Commisisons will range between $1,000 and $5,000 per sale. However, the average payout is currently between $3,200 and $3,500.
